ALEXANDRIA, VA- The Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation’s (RBFF) Take Me Fishing™ campaign and Discovery Education will host a workshop featuring their jointly developed Explore the Blue educational program on November 11, 2010, during the National Science Teachers Association’s (NSTA) Baltimore Area Conference. At the workshop, teachers will get a firsthand look at resources available on ExploretheBlue.com, including digital learning activities designed to bring critical aquatic issues to life for students and excite their enthusiasm for outdoor activities, especially boating and fishing. Teachers who attend the workshop will also have a chance to win a classroom’s worth of Ready2Fish fishing rods, reels and tackle provided by Sports Authority.

Doug Darr, Aquatic Education Coordinator for the Alabama Division Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries (WFF), has been named president-elect of the Aquatic Resources Education Association (AREA) during the association’s recent biannual meeting in Omaha, Nebraska. AREA is a non-governmental association dedicated to using sound educational practices to promote stewardship and responsible use of aquatic resources, fisheries, and habitats to enhance the quality of life for current and future generations. As president-elect, Darr will plan the 2012 AREA meeting.

The BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico from the Deepwater Horizon oil well was said to be the worst ecological disaster in the history of this country. From Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle, tar balls and oil slicks appeared. Shore birds were covered in oil, and many wondered if the sea turtles, shrimp, fish and oysters would survive. The jury’s still out on the total economic damage that this oil spill caused.

A report to the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council on shrimp trawl effort at the Council’s meeting in October indicates that a variety of factors are combining to create the best of all worlds for anglers and the Gulf. The analysis indicates that while shrimping effort is down 78 percent from the three-year average before Hurricane Katrina, the spawning stock for brown and white shrimp is the highest ever and the shrimp industry as a whole had a very profitable year last year.
