As most trout anglers are aware, many waters that are normally stocked in February by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources did not get stocked this year because of nearly continuous snowfall and poor road conditions. Some streams could not be stocked until late March. As a result, state hatchery employees held these fish in the hatcheries longer than normal. Because hatchery trout are fed regularly under ideal growing conditions, the state’s trout program now has additional poundage of trout for stocking. According to Wildlife Resources Section Chief Curtis I. Taylor, “This additional poundage means it will be a banner year for the state’s trout anglers.â€

It sure seems like it’s taking a long time for the fishing opener to get here. I don’t know if it’s because the ice went out so early and April was extremely warm or simply because it’s a week later, but my patience is wearing thin – I want to fish for walleyes.

The trout are back in North Florida and they appear to be bigger than ever!  Daniel Tyer shows off a nice north Florida seatrout, caught on a 4 inch, chartreuse Gulp swimming mullet bait.  We were fishing the low incoming tide in an oyster laden creek off the ICW.
