Jacksonville, FL – In October the Recreational Fishing Alliance (RFA) levied harsh criticism at the current Administration when the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council (Council) was notified by NMFS Southeast Regional Administrator Roy Crabtree that a 4,800-square mile fishing ban was pending for South Atlantic anglers. At the time, Southeast recreational anglers were expecting the worst in terms of a final ruling by NMFS to implement controversial Amendment 17A, which will ultimately establish a closed area extending from southern Georgia to Cape Canaveral, FL affecting angler harvest and possession of all snapper-grouper species.

OLYMPIA – Columbia River anglers who fish for salmon and steelhead will not be required to switch to barbless hooks next year, but state fishery managers are asking them to do it voluntarily.
“Going barbless only makes sense in these fisheries where we’re trying to maximize survival rates for released wild fish,” said Phil Anderson, director of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW). “Anglers can play an important role in that effort by using barbless hooks.”

The Lake Champlain Fish and Wildlife Management Cooperative is reporting unprecedented success resulting from the on-going sea lamprey control program. The Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are working together to improve and manage the fisheries of Lake Champlain. As a result of this program, the number and size of lake trout and salmon in the lake are increasing. This is great news. This is expected to translate into better fishing on Lake Champlain in the coming year. The wounding rate reductions observed this fall on lake trout and salmon also are a good indication that lamprey are having less of an impact on other fish in Lake Champlain. Species such as walleye and the lake sturgeon, which is listed as endangered in Vermont, also benefit.
