Fishing regulations designed to promote quality bluegill fishing at Willow Slough Fish and Wildlife Area’s J.C. Murphey Lake will be temporarily relaxed starting Dec. 15.
The change addresses the 1,000-acre Newton County lake’s unusually low winter water levels. It allows anglers to take additional fish home rather than have them succumb to low oxygen levels under the ice and go to waste.

The recreational harvest of snook will close in all Atlantic coastal and inland waters, including Lake Okeechobee and the Kissimmee River, beginning on Dec. 15. The annual winter harvest season closure of snook in these areas, which normally ends on Feb. 1, has been extended until Sept. 1, 2011, by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) due to the prolonged cold weather that impacted snook in Florida earlier this year.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) Secretary Robert Barham has extended the fall inshore shrimp season in a portion of state inside waters east of the Mississippi River that was scheduled to close December 21, 2010. Biological sampling data and trip ticket reports indicate that marketable quantities of white shrimp still remain available for harvest in these waters. Typically, the inshore shrimp season closes in late December when only smaller, less valuable shrimp are being caught by recreational and commercial fishermen. However, extended closures in state waters throughout the summer and into fall prevented the shrimp stock from being harvested at levels seen in previous years. MINNEAPOLIS (Dec. 13, 2010) – The Gwinnett Convention and Visitors Bureau (GCVB) presented FLW Outdoors with the prestigious Event of the Year award for the Forrest Wood Cup and FLW Outdoors Expo during its Annual Tourism Awards and Holiday Luncheon. The Forrest Wood Cup, the world championship of bass fishing, was held on Lake Lanier Aug. 5-8, 2010, and included the FLW Outdoors Expo, which was held at the Gwinnett Convention Center and Arena.

They include Nicholas Kerigan, national commodore, US Coast Guard Auxiliary; Jim Graybeal, president, National Association of State Boating Law Administrators; Creighton Maynard, chief commander, US Power Squadrons; Linda Bendsen, president, Recreational Boaters of California; and Bob Adriance, editor of Seaworthy magazine. The appointments were announced this past week at the Council’s annual meeting in Ft. Myers Beach, Florida.
