The 27th Annual Pirate’s Cove World Class Billfish Tournament started yesterday with 69 boats and crew headed for the open seas in hopes of catching the winning fish and the six figure prize. The big question as the boats headed out of Oregon Inlet for day one of the 27th Annual Pirate’s Cove Billfish Tournament was North or South. For several weeks there have been good numbers of sailfish in the area south of Cape Hatteras and to the north the white marlin fishing has been heating up. The boats that went North had the better day of fishing. 67 boats fished yesterday with 2 taking a lay day.

08/10/2010 – Smokey the Bear, an animated, talking bear created as the mascot of the United States Forest Service in 1944 to educate the public on the dangers of forest fires, preached his first message of “Only YOU can prevent forest fires” in 1947. Commercials with Smokey the Bear generally showed cartoon animals scurrying away from fire with their homes being destroyed, and the land being devastated. This nationwide campaign called for the prevention of forest fires. But Smokey the Bear didn’t tell us what wildlife biologists and foresters knew – that fire was a naturally-occurring phenomenon in woodland management.

Too much of the time we make fishing more difficult than it needs to be. Sure there are some advanced things we can do to catch more fish, but we don’t need those advanced techniques until we reach an advanced level of fishing expertise. There are lots of folks out there who would like to get started in fishing, or introduce a youngster to fishing, but sometimes it appears to them that there’s just too much technology and expense involved in fishing, so they find something else to do. That’s too bad: Fishing doesn’t need to be difficult, and it sure doesn’t need to be expensive. I re-discovered that recently.
