Waiting to sign up for a snowmobile safety class may mean sitting out the snowmobile season, according to officials from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
“Some snowmobilers wait to see how much snow is in the forecast or on the ground before getting around to taking a DNR snowmobile safety training course,†said Capt. Mike Hammer, DNR Enforcement Education Program coordinator. “In some instances it’s too late because classes have already concluded or are full. No Snowmobile Safety Certificate, no snowmobiling.â€

Outdoor enthusiasts can ready for the snow by lacing up a their own pair of Ojibwe-style wooden snowshoes at a two-day workshop from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16, and from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 17. Instructors will guide participants step-by-step through the process, or they can work at their own pace.

SALEM, Ore. — The technical committee advising Columbia River fishery managers has released its forecast for the 2010 spring Chinook run. If the fish show up as projected, the forecast of 470,000 spring chinook would be the largest return to the Columbia since 1938.
