OLYMPIA – Despite recent showers, the summer’s prolonged dry weather has left fish vulnerable, including on the Dungeness River, where two anglers were recently caught poaching.
An enforcement officer with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) cited the anglers for multiple fishing violations, including possession of federally protected wild chinook salmon.

With the conclusion of the 2009 regular season, the brunt of the qualifying spots for both the 2010 Bassmaster Classic and Bassmaster Elite Series have been determined. The final Elite event of the regular season, on New York’s Oneida Lake, is the sight where those races were determined, along with Rookie of the Year, but one all-important race remains: The Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year title will be won, for the first time, in the two-event Bassmaster Elite Series postseason, set for Sept. 10-18 on Alabama’s Lake Jordan and Alabama River. Only the top 12 pros in the AOY standings advanced Sunday and will participate.

SYRACUSE, NEW YORK – Thirty-two-year-old Chad Griffin caught his first bass at 22 years old and instantly became addicted. Ten years later, the Cresson, Texas, resident who grew up in Alaska – a state reportedly with no largemouth bass population – cashed in on a dream, to the tune of $100,000, at the regular-season finale, the Ramada Champion’s Choice on Oneida Lake. Griffin, an Elite Series rookie, worked Oneida for both relevant species – largemouth and smallmouth – and tallied 65 pounds, 10 ounces, enough to hold off hard-charging Jeff Kriet of Ardmore, Okla., by more than 2 pounds.

FINDLAY, ILLINOIS – The Illini Division of the $8 million Walmart Bass Fishing League® will visit Lake Shelbyville in Findlay, Ill., August 29-30 for the fifth and final regular-season event. As many as 200 boaters and 200 co-anglers are expected to compete in the tournament, which will award as much as $45,000 in cash, including a top award of $6,000 in the Boater Division.
