The Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has released the boating accident statistics for 2008, and fortunately, there were fewer boating fatalities last year. The reported 54 fatalities represent a 30-percent reduction from the 2007 statistics. While this is a step in the right direction, boaters shouldn’t let their guard down, according to the FWC.

Annapolis, Maryland -Yesterday, Governor Martin O’Malley signed into law a new Aquaculture Shellfish Leasing bill (Senate Bill 271/House Bill 312) that revamps leasing laws to make it easier for watermen and others to grow shellfish in the Bay. The bill, developed out of recommendations from the Oyster Advisory Commission, is another one of Governor O’Malley’s Smart, Green and Growing initiatives from the 2009 Legislative Assembly.

The Richmond Hill, Georgia, team of Kelley Clements, Tracy Shaw, Ellis Phillips, Michael Mosley, and Rusty Rogers, captured a 58.58 pound kingfish on day two of the South Florida event held at the Four Fish Marina inJensen Beach. Their second day smoker, coupled with the 38.87 scaled by the Mercury powered Fountain team on day one, gave the “On the Brink” a 97.45 two fish aggregate to capture the $40,000 cash prize as well as a boat load of Raymarine electronics. They also picked up an additional $10,000 cash prize in the local Francis Langford Memorial event.
