The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will be conducting fisheries surveys and assessments during the 2009 field season in the Aitkin fisheries area.
Fisheries surveys and assessments monitor changes in fish populations and determine whether management strategies have been effective. Survey frequency varies on each lake depending on angler use, lake size, frequency of stocking, DNR staff use the data in developing individual fisheries lake management plans. The plans identify goals for key species in the lake and outline specific management activities.

Action: Marine Areas 8-1, 8-2, 9 and 11 will reopen for recreational coonstripe and pink shrimp fishing, with a 150-foot maximum fishing depth restriction. The north/central portion of Marine Area 7 will also reopen for recreational coonstripe and pink shrimp fishing, with a 200-foot maximum fishing depth restriction. Marine Area 13 will be closing to spot shrimp fishing, but remain open for coonstripe and pink shrimp fishing on June 1.
