A Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks’ warden found a dead wolf near Gardiner on Apr. 3.
The Swan Lake Pack wolf had mange and was seen most recently in the vicinity of Mammoth, Wyoming. The animal was collared, but the collar was not operational.

CONCORD, N.H. — New Hampshire’s white-tailed deer population once again showed no evidence of chronic wasting disease (CWD), based on monitoring data gathered during the 2007 hunting season. New Hampshire Fish and Game Deer Biologist Kent Gustafson recently received results from a federally certified veterinary diagnostic laboratory that indicate that all the deer tissue samples taken during last fall’s hunting season tested negative for CWD. A total of 405 tissue samples were tested.

Light Goose Conservation Order: The special season began in the Panhandle Feb. 6. Lots of snows remain in the Etter area, but have been reluctant to decoy with traditional hunting methods. Outfitters are hoping liberal tactics will make a different. Good hunts were posted last year in the High Plains through early March. Along the coast, overcast skies have helped put geese in callable range. Good hunts were posted near Palacios, Anahuac and Seadrift in the fog. A few days last week saw sea fog develop along the coast and hunters took advantage with 70, 80 and 100-bird hunts. On the prairie, geese have been scattered. Some outfitters have said they have had to drive over 250 miles a day to find huntable numbers of birds. The Idaho Fish and Game Commission will set the salmon fishing seasons in an open public meeting at 8 a.m. Wednesday, April 16.
The commissioners will meet by telephone conference at 8 a.m. at the Idaho Department of Fish and Game at 600 S. Walnut Street in Boise. Commissioners are expected the set spring Chinook salmon seasons on the Clearwater, Snake River, Lower and Little Salmon.

As the April snow blew sideways across Camas Prairie, 20 eager young hunters bundled up for the first hunt of their lifetime.
The rookie hunters, ages 10 to 14, were awarded a day of pheasant hunting at the Flying-B Ranch near Kamiah. Each youth was selected based on their maturity, good grades and essays they wrote while participating in a hunter education course held recently in Grangeville.

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game wants to know how many hatchery trout anglers are catching.
Biologists will be releasing different strains of rainbow trout in several reservoirs across Idaho. The goal of the study is to maximize fish harvest by anglers. The fish will be stocked during the week of April 7 or thereafter, depending on ice conditions at each reservoir.

Anyone of the thousands of frequent visitors to CJ Strike Wildlife Management Area or CJ Strike Reservoir may have noticed some changes in the area and wondered what’s going on.
Back in 1953, the CJ Strike Wildlife Management Area was established in concert with the construction of CJ Strike Dam and the resulting reservoir on the Snake River.

Wolf report: states take over

With the removal of wolves in the Northern Rocky Mountains from the federal endangered species list, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is no longer compiling the wolf weekly.
The states of Idaho, Montana and Wyoming are going to try to keep the wolf weekly going as individual states. In the past reporting has been on livestock incidents, major wolf management, outreach and monitoring information by wolf program staff, and other information of significance dealing with wolves.
