Effective dates: Marine Area 1 (Ilwaco): Open 12:01 a.m. Thursday May 1, 2008, 7-days per week until 70% of the quota is reached, or until July 20, 2008 whichever comes first. The fishery will reopen on August 1, 2008 and continue three days a week, Friday through Sunday, until the remaining quota is reached, or Sept. 30, 2008 whichever comes first. It is unlawful to fish for, retain, or possess any bottomfish, except Pacific cod and sablefish with halibut on board.

Many of you have heard about the challenge of maintaining angling opportunity for the summer flounder fishery along the Atlantic coast. This fishery, one of the most important on the Atlantic, has been threatened with a closure by federal managers in the Exclusive Economic Zone (three miles to 200 miles) in 2009. Clearly such an action would reduce recreational fishing opportunity and have a negative impact on the sportfishing businesses which depend on the summer flounder fishery. The irony of this threat is that summer flounder stocks in the Atlantic are at a 40 year high.

Pennsylvania Game Commission Deputy Executive Director Michael W. Schmit today offered testimony on behalf of the agency before the House Finance Committee in support House Bill 1676 to provide for an alternative funding stream for agency operations. Rep. David Levdansky (D-Allegheny) sponsored HB 1676, and serves as House Finance Committee chairman.
