New rules proposed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) would increase the restitution value of lake sturgeon. Under the proposed rules:
– Restitution value for lake sturgeon more than 40 inches would increase from $500 to $1,000. Restitution value for lake sturgeon more than 50 inches would be $1,000, plus $100 for each inch over 50 inches.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will hold a public meeting on its forest classification and motor vehicle route designation proposal for state forest lands in Cook County on Tuesday, May 22, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts, 51 West Fifth Street, Grand Marais. The proposal has been developed in collaboration with Cook County, the U.S. Forest Service and the Grand Portage Band.

Waterfowl biologists are using satellites to track the spring migration of 16 lesser scaup to discover the cause of this species’ 20-year decline in the Mississippi River Flyway.
The scaup, a medium-sized diving duck, are carrying implanted satellite transmitters that send a signal to orbiting satellites about every day. Each bird’s location is forwarded to Dr. Al Afton, a scientist at Louisiana State University who is heading the study. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) purchased seven transmitters and provided staff to help capture ducks. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and other state natural resource agencies are also providing funding and staff.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) in Fergus Falls will be conducting an open water creel survey on Otter Tail Lake from May 12 until Oct. 14.
During this time, anglers fishing Otter Tail Lake will likely be approached by a DNR creel clerk. Anglers will be asked to participate in the survey by answering some questions about their fishing and allowing the creel clerk to measure some of the fish they caught.

Minnesota anglers are counting the days until the May 12 fishing opener and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is helping – with a reminder to introduce someone new to the sport.
The DNR will count down the days to the fishing opener on electronic billboards throughout the Twin Cities metropolitan area beginning May 7. The space was purchased in partnership with the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation, a nonprofit group dedicated to growing participation in boating and fishing and Wildlife Forever.
