Hot and dry conditions are pushing Colorado’s black bears out of their natural range in a search for food. As in years past, this means that residents in bear areas need to use extra caution with attractants such as trash, pet food, barbeque grills and birdfeeders; however, beyond the usual warnings and challenges, officials with the Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) are seeing some new problems crop up this year.

Leroy M. Young, Jr., a 26-year employee of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) has been named as the agency’s Director of the Bureau of Fisheries.
In announcing the appointment, PFBC Executive Director Doug Austen said, “Leroy will bring to the bureau director position a wealth of experience and the ability to work with a wide variety of interest groups. I am confident that he will strive to make the Bureau of Fisheries even more successful in its efforts on behalf of the aquatic resources as well as the citizens of the Commonwealth and our many visitors.â€

The angler and crew aboard the Queen of Hearts in Bermuda had to wait until the early hours of July 5th to find out they had won the 23rd annual Fourth of July World Cup Blue Marlin Championship (World Cup). Standing in their way was the crew aboard the Hokulia I who had hooked a blue marlin late in the day in Kona, Hawaii. They battled their fish for almost two hours beyond the end of fishing, but in the end, they saw their fish was not big enough to beat the 728 lb blue marlin weighed in by Queen of Hearts. The Hokulia I tagged and released their fish.

The DNR has adopted an emergency rule to permit a series of three controlled Canada goose reduction hunts at Summit Lake State Park.
Various non-lethal methods of managing the Canada goose population at the park have not been successful.

Nearly 20 different organizations and agencies signed an agreement yesterday pledging to work together to provide recreational shooting opportunities along Colorado’s Front Range.
The U. S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Colorado Wildlife Federation, National Wild Turkey Federation, Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW), Colorado State Parks and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, are just some of the organizations that agreed to work together in order to provide safe and sustainable recreational shooting opportunities.
