I spoke with Ken at Master Bait & Tackle in Bonita Springs today. He was telling me that snapper fishing is excellent on reefs and ledges about 13 miles offshore. Anchor on your spot, chum heavily, then drop a pinfish of shrimp into the slick to catch lane, mangrove, and yellowtail snapper. Pinfish will move in and steal your bait before the snapper have a chance to get to it, so if they show up, pull anchor and try another spot. Good numbers of large grouper are being caught by those willing to run 80 miles offshore. Calm summertime seas make the trip easy on your body but high fuel prices make it hard on your wallet. If you can afford to go, look for the grouper on ledges and hard bottom. Snook fishing is great on the beaches. A large pinfish or top water plug will catch snook. Remember […]

This is a follow up to Captain Vic’s post yesterday on the proposed rule changes being considered for redfish by the FWC. I found this information in a report the FWRI presented to the FWC in there June meeting. The report gives a rundown on the possible rule change options and there estimated results. These are just options that are being presented for consideration. Nothing has been decided and from the little bit of information I was able to dig up, nothing will be decided before December or January. If you see options here that you can agree with, and others that you can’t, lets let them know. I will try to find out if there going to be any more Red Drum Work Group Meetings this year and let you know.

August was a scorcher with humidity’s in the ninety’s but we’re still catching fish. You need to pick your times and places but the bites been fairly consistent. Perhaps not the numbers we’d like but still catching. Warm summer waters make fish lethargic for most of the day but when fishing at night they seem more active. Many summer anglers find nighttime fishing enjoyable and provided the mosquitoes don’t carry you off the fishing is relatively productive. (Read more)
