In just three trips to Nantahala Lake this month, angler Mark Swann caught two North Carolina record kokanee salmon. The latest is a 3.07-pound fish that measured 19½ inches in length. Swann caught his first record-breaker, a 2.48 pounder, on Aug. 3, only to see the record broken the next day by 9-year-old Levi Towery, who brought in a salmon that topped his by a mere two-tenths of a pound.

SALT LAKE CITY — The chance of drawing a permit to hunt wild turkeys in Utah next spring just got a lot better.

The NJ DEP Division of Fish and Wildlife’s popular Take a Kid Hunting Programs for the fall will begin on Saturday, September 22 with the Youth Bow Hunt for deer. Additional days for firearm deer, waterfowl, and pheasant / upland bird will follow.

Wildlife Department to use caviar to fund paddlefish management program
At its September meeting, the Oklahoma Wildlife Conservation Commission approved an extensive business plan for a pilot paddlefish research and caviar processing program scheduled to begin operating in February. An overview of the plan was provided to the Commission by the Department’s Brent Gordon, northeast region fisheries supervisor, and Lt. Keith Green, game warden supervisor.

Reduced fire danger allows fire restrictions to be lifted throughout the state
The combination of an increased amount of precipitation, and a return to more normal late summer weather patterns and conditions, with shorter days, cooler temperatures and higher humidity, has reduced the potential for fires to start and spread.

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore.—The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission today unanimously adopted the Rogue River Spring Chinook Conservation Plan and related regulation changes.
The conservation plan addresses the decline of spring chinook through management techniques and new harvest rules. Before Lost Creek Dam was built, wild spring chinook returns averaged about 28,000. Since 1990, returns have averaged about 9,000 despite decreased harvest rates in the ocean fisheries.
